The next morning we have an early start for a second trip to the west bank, going by the Colossi again and on to the hills where lesser nobles had tombs built. With hard climbing in hot weather, we visit tombs of Nakht, Menna, Ramose, Rekhmere, and Sennefern.
Next stops are the Ramesseum, with a large fallen granite statue, and a rest stop run by a sheik known as the “last of the grave robbers”, but now providing soft drinks, beer, and souvenirs. He let Glenn take a photo and we later send enlargements to him via LIsa and Fattah.
We go to the valley where workers at the Valley of the Kings had been kept separated. The best artists made their own tombs there as they saw fit. Glenn had seen pictures of the tomb of Senndgym earlier, perhaps in a National Geographic article. It is smaller than he had imagined, but with very good art work and color. .
Cairo is an overnight train ride from Luxor. We go aboard at 7pm to our small compartment with two bunks where we eat and sleep. Supper isn’t very good, with barely warm food. After eating we have the seat made into a bunk and go to bed early. We awaken at 5:15, but the train is 2 hours late so breakfast is late too. There is a low thin fog over the fields as the sun comes up.
