CHAPTER 11. FRANCE - PICARDY TO ALSACE CONT.

Finally we have a warm and sunny day in June as we leave Strasbourg and drive to Barr to follow south along the rest of the Alsace Wine Route. We drive up to Haut-Koenigsburg for a great view over Selestat and the valley. All the villages are picturesque and pretty, but Riquewihr is outstanding, tho touristy . We stop early and get a room at A l’Arbre Vert in Ammerschwihr. After a rest we walk around town, seeking the shady side of the street on a warm afternoon.

The next day the good warm weather continues as we drive to Colmar and pick up mail at poste restante, then go to the Musee Underlinden. it is a good museum with great church art, well displayed, and with a variety of items from the area including costumes, armor, swords, and spears. We eat an OK, but not gourmet, lunch at a brasserie, and look for, but don’t find, a Herald Tribune newspaper. After seeing the Dominican Church and more walking around Colmar, we drive on and get a room for two nights at the Berceau du Vigeron Hotel in Turckheim, another scenic village along the wine route with timbered houses and many flowers.

It is overcast and cooler today, but not cold and with little rain. We drive up into the mountains via Les Trois Epis and Orbey and down to Kaysersburg, another very pretty village. At Ribeauville we eat lunch at the Michelin one star (then) Restaurant Les Vosges. The food is good, but we feel the portions are small. On up a scenic, twisting, up and down, road with many viewpoints to Ste. Marie aux Mines. We continue on the Crest road to Col de la Schlucht, then down by rocky and hairpin curves, and back to Turckheim as it starts to rain a little.

We have certainly enjoyed the Route du Vin, or Alsace Wine Route. The wine grape covered rolling foothills are beautiful and the many villages are clean and neat, with picturesque buildings, and many well tended flower boxes add color.
