CHAPTER 9. NORMANDY & BRITTANY CONT.

It is clear and sunny, but with a cold wind blowing as we drive thru wet and gleaming country to Mont St. Michel, and are one of the early arrivals. Slowly but steadily we make it up the 300 steps to the church level. The number of steps is according to the English speaking Norman girl tour guide. We don’t know if the ramped walks are included in the number of steps, but it is quite a climb! The tour goes thru the church & choir, cloisters, down to the monks dining room, and further down to the area where royalty and rich pilgrims stayed and cooking was done in a giant fireplace. After the tour we walk down part way and have lunch, including a well known Madam Poullard fluffy omelet. Then down to the car via a narrow and crowded walkway surrounded by eating places and souvenir shops.

From Dol we drive west and along the north coast to Cape Frehel. It is raining hard and the wind is blowing 60 MPH; we are about to give up when the rain suddenly stops and all we have to contend with is the wind, so we continue to the cape. We think the water should be rougher than it is with the strong wind.
