We leave our nice Salzburg room with Rose Marie and follow a Michelin back roads scenic route to Linz, stopping for a picnic lunch along the road and for a tour by foot of Wels. We make our way thru a maze of one way streets in Linz, across the Danube, and up to the Postlingberg vantage point for a great view of Linz. We drive downstream along the north side of the Danube, and find a nice Privat Zimmer in Grein to stay in. After supper at a local restaurant we enjoy the river which is right across the street from the balcony of our room.
This is a nice easy day driving down beside the beautiful Danube from Grein, stopping here and there to sight see. Major stops are Persenbeug where the Danube is dammed, the Melk Abbey, Spitz, Weisen-kirchen, and then to stay at Dürnstein. There is a bridge across to the south bank of the river where the Melk Abbey is. The Abbey is undergoing major alterations and repairs. We see the church and museum at Weisenkirchen. Dürnstein is delightful with narrow streets, lots to see, with many tourists, but without a tourist trap feeling. We find a nice room in the Alte Rathaus Pension and have a good dinner at a nearby restaurant.
After breakfast at the Pension we drive to Krems, then back a bit to cross the Danube and go by secondary roads thru pretty green farmland to Tulin. After seeing the romanesque church and the outside of the funerary chapel we have a tasty lunch at a hotel on the main plaza.
