We have made two visits to Germany; the first in 1978, and the second in 1986. In 1978 we flew into Munich (#14) for 6 nights before going on to Austria and the VW bus trip thru eastern Europe (#5). In 1986 we flew into Frankfurt to take delivery of a VW Jetta, then spent 3 months in France, Switzerland, and Germany.
VW had a good deal in 1986: where previously one had to go to the factory to take delivery, and drop off the car at the port for shipping, we were able to take delivery at a Frankfurt dealership and drop off at a Frankfurt airport hotel - very convenient for us! The 3 months of travel made good use of the new car, and also eliminated the California sales tax (proof of the time spent overseas was later required for the Franchise Tax Board).
We begin this trip in early April, 1986 in Frankfurt, but it is cold, so we head for the south of France (#17), and don’t return to Germany until late in June. Then we drive from Vaduz, Liechtenstein (#12) thru a green valley with some glacier carved rock, and after a stop at a Swiss supermarket to spend the rest of our Swiss francs, continue on to Lindau on Bodensee. Walking part of the Michelin Green Guide tour of Lindau it is hot, so we stay on the shady side, seeing several Japanese tourists, and a pretty small harbor. Going on to Memmingen we stop in a nice room at the Garni am Sudring Hotel. There is a terrific lightning and rain storm tonight.
The storm last night broke the hot weather, but it is still warm and clear. We drive to nearby Ottobeuren and visit the Benedictine Abbey church. It is well worth the 3 star rating Michelin gives it, calling it the climax of the German Baroque style of architecture. The rococo interior is very busy, bright, and pretty, and reminds us of the Wies church in Bavaria that we saw during our 1978 visit to Munich (#14).
